If you need driving lessons in Guildford, Hamilton School of Motoring has several, locally experienced, driving instructors covering the area in Guildford. All of whom are able to cater for a range of students – from complete beginners, to those who simply need a little fine-tuning before taking their test.
Hamilton instructors are all DVSA registered, and members of the Driving Instructors Association. We are also members of Checkatrade, which means we are monitored and vetted to ensure a high standard of professional practice.
Guildford is a large town in Surrey, just off the A3, around 27 miles southwest of central London. Guildford itself lies at the eastern end of the A31 – the main trunk road to Farnham, Winchester and Southampton. If you live in one of the surrounding towns or villages, such as Woking, East Horsley or Godalming you may also want to take your driving test in Guildford; and your instructor will help you become familiar with the area.
The town centre is pedestrianised, but there are plenty of residential streets linking the A246, Stoke Road and Woodbridge Road, on which to become comfortable with basic clutch control, emergency stops and maneouvering. Further west, the A31 becomes a dual carriageway providing useful practice in driving at speed and lane discipline. Driving here or on the A3 ensures students are better prepared for motorway driving once they have passed their test.
The test centre is a 10-minute drive from the town centre, on the Slyfield Industrial Estate (off Moorfield Road) GU1 1SA. Car parking is available for driving test candidates.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Once you have grasped the basics of driving you will need to build your confidence by getting experience of the different types of roads you will be expected to drive along during your test. Narrow residential roads mean you must be aware of hazards such as oncoming traffic. You will also need to pass parked cars safely and negotiate mini roundabouts correctly.
Further out, you will need to be competent on the intersections between the busy A-roads, which are often multi-lane roundabouts with several exits. Rural roads around the town also provide challenges, particularly negotiating sharp bends safely and confidently.
Although the DVSA do not publish test routes, your instructor will be familiar with the area and the routes usually taken around the town by the examiners. Your instructor may be able to arrange a ‘mock test’ routes will cover all the hazards and conditions described earlier. He or She will also be able to tell you what the driving instructor will be looking for and what to do if you make a mistake during your test (most of us do!).
